         Please…allow me just a quick word about myself...my name is Peter Van Brady. Shawn, my business partner since 1994, nick named me “VAN the VA Loan Man.” Shawn said it was because I had taken my dad’s first name – Van, and Shawn combined it with his license plate, which has always said “Loan Man,” since the day I met him. That’s how he got “VAN the Loan Man.” Then he took it a step further…

         After 9 /11, I wanted to work with more Policemen and Firemen because that day, September 11th 2001 really affected me. You probably remember or heard how many great public service men and women we lost that day, when we were attacked on our own soil. I lost an old employee when United Airlines flight 175 from Boston was the second plane to hit the twin towers.

         Lisa Frost was an innocent, brilliant young woman that I’ll never forget as long as I live. She was extremely bright and destined for a special greatness in her life. It was so obvious to everyone that met her. I got to know her when she was only a sophomore in high school…yet way ahead of her years.

         I hired her as a telemarketer in 1997, and soon she was leading and managing the entire marketing team at my company. When she graduated high school, she went to Boston University, and was coming home that day in September…what an unfortunate tragedy…

         Of course the whole world stood still in shock as the news unfolded. And as the reality of the event sank in, the entire nation wanted to help…me too. I REALLY wanted to help, but like most of us, I didn’t know what to do.

         I wrote the Lisa’s family a long letter. I described how she touched everyone around her, me included. I told them how I felt and how I held them in my prayers. I was still shell-shocked…still a bit lost. Of course we gave money to charities. But I didn’t get any RESPONSE from those efforts. (I didn’t expect any, but I still felt helpless, kind of unfulfilled if you know what I mean.)

         I felt like I needed some way of trying to contribute, some way to give back as I moved forward. So I decided to start with fireman, helping them with loans. Then policeman, then a few more firemen…one by one. When I had the opportunity to work with one of these simple heroes, it was special.

     They spend their entire lives devoted to protecting and saving us. Occasionally, a client would share a story filled with drama and sacrifice. Those stories made me feel kind of small. Hey…all I do is just sit at a desk and talk on the phone. I felt this was the least I could do to help.

         Well as you probably know, often cops and firefighters are veterans. Now one day a while back, I can’t really even remember when (Shawn and I have worked together for more than a third of our lives!), he figured out the connection between the policemen, the firemen and military service / VA, and said, “Hey Pete, from now on, I’m just going to call you VAN the VA Loan Man. Get it…” He proceeded to tell me how he connected the dots. That was it. Honestly, I think he was just trying to somehow justify his silly license plate for 20+ years.
